Circle

Poet/Lyricist:

Hadwijch II (13th c.), translated by Jane Hirshfield (b.1953)

The 13th century Belgian mystic, Hadewijch was most likely the head of a Beguine community. The Beguines were a lay sisterhood, a secular Christian sect, living in simplicity and service but not under the control of religious order. In this mystical text the circle is an image for meditation, at first removing and then embracing the world. The musical setting reflects the image with contracting and expanding textures.

Tighten

Tighten

to nothing

the circle

that is

the world's things
Then the Naked

circle

can grow wide,

enlarging,

embracing all
